How to Read Construction Drawings Before You Estimate

Before measuring a single wall, spend time understanding the drawing set as a whole. Start with the cover sheet and sheet index so you know what is included and what may be missing.

Read the general notes and the specifications. Many costly items, such as special finishes, testing requirements or temporary protection, appear only in the notes.

Check the scale on every sheet. Sheets in the same set often use different scales, and one wrong scale setting can throw off an entire takeoff.

Finally, compare plans, elevations and sections. When they disagree, write down the conflict and ask for clarification before bid day.
